DOEN Participaties, the largest impact investor in sustainable startups in the Netherlands; PDENH, an investment fund focused on companies that contribute to the green energy transition, sustainable mobility and circular economy; and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) have invested €2.25 million in robotic Additive Manufacturing company MX3D, based in Amsterdam. These funds will launch the M1, a complete robotic metal AM machine and will speed up the development of AM solution, MetalXL.

MX3D’s software and control system, MetalXL, turns existing welding robots into an industrial metal AM machine, allowing users to manage the whole process from design to manufacture in one go. The product allows for connection with multiple brands of robots, power sources and sensors and, as developments proceed, the system is hoped to allow MX3D to service over 80% of the global robotics market.

Since initial investment, MX3D has successfully introduced MetalXL with a large group of launching customers; this latest investment will be used for wider commercial rollout.

Simultaneously, the company will launch its M1 metal AM machine, a full solution for customers to start in Additive Manufacturing, including a welding robot, software and control system.

“Our Metal XL Software and Control System enables companies to turn their welding robot into a high end 3D metal printer, in the course of one day,” stated Gijs van der Velden, CEO. “Since the launch of MetalXL, we have received many customer requests whether we could supply them with a complete solution. The M1 metal AM System is the answer to this call. Now customers without a welding robot can quickly and affordably start printing large metal parts.”

Known for its additively manufactured stainless steel bridge in Amsterdam’s city centre, MX3D is sometimes seen as a pioneer in the Robotic Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) industry; as such, the company hopes that its technology may open further doors to the advantages of AM for high-impact industries like oil & gas, maritime and tooling.
